Welcome to Garden Cottage

Unique Holiday Home with Views of Richmond’s Norman Castle

This pretty, Victorian gardener’s cottage in Richmond, North Yorkshire was built in the former kitchen garden of Elizabethan Yorke House. The cottage looks over a secure, south-facing private garden with spectacular views of Richmond Castle and Billy Banks Woods. It is ideally placed with the town to the east and countryside south and west – all just a few minutes’ walk from the front door.

This delightful cottage sleeps up to six in three bedrooms with two bathrooms. Children are welcome and one or two dogs stay at no extra charge. Private off-street parking on the drive for two cars.

Last year, Garden Cottage owners, Dennis and Marcia were recognised by VisitEngland for offering the warmest of welcomes with a prestigious ROSE award – only 100 are presented in England each year.

Weekly lets, Friday to Friday. Short breaks are  available during quieter periods.

Guest Comments

"Utterly delightful, peaceful, warm and many castles to see! Swimming pool is short walk away. Thank you!"

- Regular Visitors from Surrey

"Thanks a lot, Marcia and Dennis! It has been again a lovely stay here in your wonderful, cosy and so well equipped cottage. We enjoyed it very much: having breakfast and dinners in this beautiful garden and also having a look in your wonderful, large garden. Richmond, the Swale, the Dales. the walks, the castles, the abbeys, cathedrals and the coast so near...so many opportunities for what to do. We certainly will come back to do all the things we missed and couldn't do during this holiday. There is always too little time. We don't want to leave and hope we'll be back SOON! Lots of love from all of us."

- Dad, Mum and 3 Children from Germany

"Thank you, Marcia and Dennis for our week in this lovely, very well appointed cottage, having beautiful views of the castle and of the wooded hillside. We have had a most enjoyable week, visiting our relatives and old haunts in Richmond and enjoying re-visiting Swaledale, Northallerton and the heather covered moors. A week passes so quickly and we are sorry to go."

"We have had a lovely few days here in this super cottage. Done lots of walking and visiting the Dales and also enjoying local hospitality. Would love to see the garden in the summer - what a gem it is."

- Visitors from Norfolk and York

"This is our third stay at Garden Cottage and it was equally enjoyable. We visited lots of nearby villages and towns, but mostly enjoyed our time in Richmond itself. We had a superb Sunday lunch at The Bay Horse in Ravensworth - well worth a visit. Thanks again for providing such a comfortable, clean cottage. We will come again I am sure."

- Returning Guests

"A last minute decision to get away for a few days and we have not been disappointed. Lovely cottage, beautiful garden and great location. Thank you."

- Last Minute Holiday

"We've had a lovely stay for our first visit to Garden Cottage. The house and gardens are beautiful and the location is perfect. Lots to see and do and we would recommend 'The Old Station' for a coffee stop or something more substantial The George and Dragon in Hudswell is very nice, with a fantastic view from the beer garden - good selection of beers too!."

- Couple from Ayrshire

"A wonderful week, in a wonderful location with surprisingly wonderful weather! Great walks both up and down the river from Richmond as well as further afield. A great location for exploring. Thank you."

- Couple from Bucks

- Family from Edinburgh

"Fabulous again - see you next year."

- Four Friends, Two Dogs from Notts.

"Our second visit to Garden Cottage - we immediately feel at home in this comfy cottage and enjoy the beautiful garden, particularly as the weather has been amazing (dare I say, sometimes a bit too hot!). For local dog walks off-lead, the racecourse is superb, also the old railway path by Richmond Station - it's also nice and shaded! This year we discovered The Bolton Arms at Downholme - pleasant outdoor area for dogs with a fabulous view, friendly staff and great food. Barnard Castle and Eggleston Hall Gardens were also new to us and well worth a visit. Thank you for having us, we hope to be back next year."

- Human Guests and Dog Guests

"Thank you Marcia and Dennis for a truly wonderful week on this, our 2nd visit to Garden Cottage. We have had some amazing walks, particularly to Easby Abbey, which is a most stunning site of historical value to visit. One mustn't forget the incredible medieval wall paintings in Easby Church, which one shouldn't miss. Had lovely coffee, scone and cakes at Richmond Old Station and, of course, numerous delicacies from Wilfreds Deli - looking forward to future visits. Can't recommend Garden Cottage enough - many thanks!!"

- Walks and History

"It will be sad to leave this lovely 5 star cottage in a town that we hold so dearly in our hearts, having spent part of our honeymoon here in Richmond 32-years ago and visiting many times thereafter. But this stay has been made super special by Garden Cottage and its coziness, luxurious appointments, super view, well stocked kitchen, a unique 'warming' fire, comfy beds with fine linens and classic ambience...thank you Marcia and Dennis...a stay in warmer weather is a must!! Merry Christmas."
